The sun was just up over the water at El Zonte, and the surfers were still paddling out, diving through the waves and riding them in. I watched from the Punta El Zonte hostel, where the river runs into the beach, and the big round stones tumbled and knocked together every time a wave crashed. The tropical air makes the light especially luminous. I painted it back in my Seattle studio, from the photos I took that morning.
