I woke before dawn at the Punta El Zonte hostel, on the corner where the river meets the beach, and sat and watched the light come. The surfers were already paddling out, diving through the waves and riding them back to shore. The beach is made of big round stones, and you can hear them tumbling as the waves crash in. The tropical air makes the light especially luminous. I painted it later in my Seattle studio, from the photos I took that morning.
