Neural Dance Mural

An interactive prototype for a participatory mural about agency, rhythm, and connection.

About the project · An installation in development

Showing up and moving, together.

Neural Dance is a participatory mural that turns individual acts of presence into a shared, living constellation. Dance, music, and projected light make each person’s contribution visible—and let it ripple through the people around them.

Dance across the mural

Start the simulation to see 28 dancers mapped onto the mural’s silhouette stickers. Zoom in to explore; drag a marker to adjust its placement, click to add a dancer, or Shift-click to remove one.

Why make it?

As AI and automation take on more of our labor and decision-making, what will it mean to exercise human agency? Neural Dance explores a future in which meaning comes from choosing to move, create, connect, and affect the world.

Joining the mural is a small, deliberate act. Where you place yourself changes the relationships that form around you. Each dancer keeps a distinct rhythm, while their presence helps shape something larger: a collective work that exists because people chose to participate.

The intended experience

Designed for a shared gathering around music and dance, the proposed installation begins at a photo booth. Participants are photographed dancing; their silhouettes are cut into stickers, which they place wherever they choose on a mural shaped by sacred geometry and the feeling of a communal stage or amphitheater.

A fixed camera would locate the silhouettes, and a projector would illuminate each one individually. One dancer might swell with the bass, another flash with the kick, another breathe with the midrange or flicker with the treble. Their different rhythmic personalities would move together within the same music.

Nearby dancers reinforce one another. Pulses travel along connections and geometric paths, activating other dancers and spreading waves of light. The neural-network metaphor makes connection tangible: each participant becomes a point of influence in an evolving record of the gathering.

Explore the original prototype

The interactive sketch below explores the light, rhythm, and network behavior. Its colored points stand in for dancer silhouettes. It generates its own rhythmic audio; the photo booth, physical mural, and camera-to-projector installation are the next context for this idea.

Select Start simulation to begin. The demo pauses when you switch tabs or scroll away, and after five minutes of playback. You can resume whenever you’re ready. Choose a rhythm under Type, then click or tap the stage to add a dancer. Place dancers close together or farther apart and watch how the network changes. Select Start audio to hear it, adjust BPM to change the tempo, or use Seed pulse to start a wave. Shift-click removes a nearby dancer; Reset creates a new arrangement.

Ready. Select Start simulation.
